Dave Hakkens – STORY HOPPER & PRECIOUS PLASTICS
Dave Hakkens is a young Dutch designer who has devoted his work to projects providing simple solutions for global problems. He is very fond of working with his hands, but at the same time realizes the responsibility behind creating more “things”. With a new approach to design and his “sharing is caring” attitude, Dave has turned his design to inspiring and empowering people.
As part of one of those projects – Precious Plastics- Dave creates a series of machines for recycling and reusing plastic and shares the design and user guides for his inventions.
Initiated by ONE DESIGN WEEK, the students and instructor from the club Young constructor in the vocational school “Ivan Hadjienov” in the town of Kazanlak, used Dave Hakken’s design to create two plastic recycling devices. The students have had an opportunity to work first hand to create Dave’s machines from the provided plans and video instructions, thus fulfilling Dave’s project goal of others being able to build his design anywhere on demand. The exhibition Small Change, Big Difference shows the results from the collaboration and also includes demonstration of the machines.
The exhibition presents Dave Hakkens’ latest project Story Hopper. In it, through a series of video materials, the author shows us his daily activities, travels, and efforts to turn trash into meaningful, new everyday objects. His aim is to inspire more people with the idea that design is a powerful tool for altering the ways in which we interact with the world.
