100 Days of Need and Greed

The Swedish artist Kristina Schultz uses design to solve different social problems. The exhibition 100 Days of Need and Greed shows the results from her latest research  project, in which her family is the main protagonist. In the course of a 100 days, they completely changed their way of life. They are left “..with no sofa, with no utensils, with no toys, with nothing!” Together with her partner Johan and their 4 year old child Lis, Kristina removes all the household items from their home. With this, they free up enough space to understand what it is that they really need and why.

After detailed discussions and reflection on the subject, Kristina began to create new handmade objects for her home. The first products are 3 spoons. The author herself admits that her training as a designer hasn’t given her any handyman skills. That is why the objects which she creates are not perfectly manufactured, but they carry their individual aesthetic, charm, and qualities. Lis, the child in the family, is happy with the new way of life. The child spends more time being physically active, pretending she is in a theatre or a circus. Kristina points out that she never asks for the old toys while her and her partner initially struggled with the lack of certain household objects, they discovered the benefits of their newly acquired freedom from objects. The experiment finished several months ago, but in spite of that, the changes in the lifestyle of the family still continue.
