Š¢apio Wirkkala and Rut Bryk are two of the most emblematic figures in the formation of the concept for modern Finnish design and Scandinavian design as a whole. A series of events held between June 2nd 2015 and October 16th 2016 will mark the hundredth anniversary of their birth. Their professional heritage is rich and the different events in the program are a reminder of their importance. Tapio Wirkkala, a designer, sculptor and academic and his wife Rut Bryk, a graphic designer and ceramic artist are internationally acclaimed, and their creations are a part of almost every major design museum in the world. Their prolific creations range from household objects to monumental art and abstract sculpture. Wirkkala and Bryk work for different companies in Finland, Italy, Germany, and Mexico. Esa Laaksonen will tell us more about their professional path and achievements in a special lecture. A practicing architect, Laaksonen is the director of the Alvar Alto Academy in Helsinki since its creation in 1999. His rich experience includes teaching and editing, over 30 international architecture prizes, international publications, and the design of public buildings.
